Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 27, Equinor, Norway’s state-owned energy company, has awarded a contract to Nexans, a French cable systems designer and manufacturer, to supply new electrical umbilicals for the Åsgard field in the Norwegian Sea. The new cables will replace those operational for over 25 years, extending the field’s productive life, which began with oil production in May 1999 and gas production in October 2000.

Nexans will produce nearly 40 kilometers of pre-terminated cables and related equipment at its Rognan factory, with delivery scheduled for March 2026 to Equinor’s base in Central Norway. The Åsgard field, located at Haltenbanken, approximately 200 kilometers off Trøndelag’s coast and 50 kilometers south of the Heidrun field, includes the Midgard, Smørbukk, Smørbukk South, and Smørbukk North deposits. The infrastructure also supports the Mikkel gas field and the Morvin and Trestakk oil fields.

“This contract is important for Nexans in Rognan,” said Karl Peter Johansen, Factory Manager at Nexans Rognan. “It supports the factory’s role as a central workplace in the region and confirms our competence to deliver advanced technology for demanding deliveries. At the same time, it is positive to be able to support Equinor locally and contribute to the extended lifespan and sustainable use of the infrastructure.”

The Åsgard field operates with a production ship (Åsgard A), a semi-submersible platform (Åsgard B), and a storage ship (Åsgard C). The replacement of aging umbilicals is critical to maintaining efficient and reliable operations, ensuring the field continues to contribute to Norway’s energy production.
