Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 11, Dubai-based ports and logistics company DP World has renewed its partnership with German shipping line Hapag-Lloyd for another ten years, continuing their collaboration at the Port of Santos, Brazil’s largest container hub. The agreement, originally established in 2014, ensures Hapag-Lloyd’s vessels will continue to operate at DP World’s multipurpose terminal into the 2030s.
The renewed contract aligns with a $190 million expansion project at DP World’s Santos terminal. By 2026, the project will extend the quay to 1,290 meters and increase the terminal’s annual handling capacity to 1.7 million TEU. In 2024, the terminal managed a record 1.25 million TEU, a 14% increase from the previous year.
The upgrades aim to accommodate larger vessels and reduce turnaround times, enhancing service for major clients like Hapag-Lloyd. Earlier this year, DP World also secured a long-term agreement with Maersk to expand container operations in Brazil, reflecting its strategy to strengthen ties with key shipping partners.
“This renewal highlights the strength of our partnership and the key role Santos plays as a gateway for Brazilian trade,” said Fabio Siccherino, CEO of DP World in Brazil. “With our upcoming expansion and new equipment, we’re ensuring we can meet growing demand while delivering reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.”
Hapag-Lloyd’s senior vice president for Brazil, Luigi Ferrini, emphasized the agreement’s importance: “This agreement reinforces our commitment to the Brazilian market and strengthens our global partnership with DP World.” He added that the collaboration would enhance service quality for customers in the region.
The Port of Santos serves as a critical hub for Brazil’s trade, facilitating the movement of goods through efficient and modern infrastructure. The extended partnership and terminal enhancements position DP World and Hapag-Lloyd to meet rising demand in the region’s logistics sector.
This collaboration underscores DP World’s commitment to improving operational efficiency and sustainability at one of South America’s busiest ports. By investing in infrastructure and fostering long-term partnerships, the company aims to support Brazil’s growing role in global trade.
The agreement also reflects the mutual focus of DP World and Hapag-Lloyd on delivering reliable and high-quality services. As the Port of Santos expands, it is poised to handle increased cargo volumes, benefiting both the local economy and international trade networks.
