Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 11, A.P. Moller – Maersk and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 9 in Hong Kong to advance decarbonisation in global supply chains and bolster CATL’s international logistics operations. The agreement was formalized by Morten Bo Christiansen, Maersk’s Senior Vice President and Global Head of Energy Transition, and Akin Li, CATL’s Executive President of Overseas Car Business.
The signing event was attended by Robert Maersk Uggla, Chairman of Maersk, and Libin Tan, CATL’s Chief Customer Officer and Co-President of Sales & Marketing, alongside other senior leaders from both companies. This MoU builds on a five-year collaboration in ocean transport, intermodal logistics, and warehousing.
Under the agreement, Maersk will serve as CATL’s preferred global logistics partner, providing comprehensive services including ocean and air freight, project logistics, and storage. The partnership aims to develop efficient, scalable logistics solutions tailored to specific markets, supporting CATL’s global expansion and enhancing supply chain performance.
“We’re pleased to enter this new phase of partnership, combining CATL’s cutting-edge battery technologies with our integrated logistics capabilities to redefine what’s possible in logistics,” said Morten Bo Christiansen. “This partnership presents a powerful opportunity to accelerate the decarbonisation of global logistics — not only for Maersk, but also for our customers and the broader industry.”
The MoU emphasizes joint efforts to electrify logistics infrastructure using CATL’s advanced battery technologies. This includes exploring battery-powered solutions for container shipping, port operations, inland transport, and warehousing. The collaboration will also focus on electric system design, energy management, and battery recycling to support sustainable practices.
CATL will act as a key battery technology partner to help Maersk achieve its 2040 net-zero emissions goal. “As a global giant of integrated logistics, Maersk, just like CATL, is committed to promoting energy transition and achieving a net-zero emissions future,” said Libin Tan. “At this new stage of development, both parties aim to deepen collaboration in shipping, end-to-end supply chain, digitalisation, and new energy applications, working together to accelerate decarbonisation in the global logistics industry.”
This partnership aligns with Maersk’s recent efforts to retrofit approximately 200 time-chartered vessels in collaboration with 50 shipowners, aiming to reduce emissions, lower fuel costs, and increase cargo capacity. By integrating CATL’s expertise in battery technology, Maersk seeks to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of its global operations, contributing to a greener logistics sector.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, positioning both companies to lead in sustainable logistics solutions worldwide.
