The announcement came in a press release from BYD Commercial Vehicle on October 11 via its WeChat account.
Led by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), this project represents a significant step in incorporating autonomous buses into a public transport system outside their home markets. Aligned with Singapore’s goals for sustainable mobility and zero-emission transport, the trial will utilize fully electric vehicles. Services are slated to commence in mid-2026, operating on Route 191 in the One-North business district and Route 400, which connects Marina Bay and Shenton Way. The 16-seat buses will charge the same fares as standard public transit options, ensuring accessibility for commuters.
Singapore’s rigorous evaluation process emphasized bidders’ experience in managing autonomous fleets in diverse urban settings and their ability to handle remote oversight. The successful consortium, including BYD, MKX Technologies, and MOGOX, demonstrated strong capabilities in these areas, securing the contract through comprehensive demonstrations of technical proficiency.
BYD’s commercial electric vehicles, powered by proprietary battery, motor, control, and chip systems, are already deployed in various global applications, such as airports, ports, logistics centers, and urban transit networks.
