Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 15, AW Shipping, a joint venture between UAE-based ADNOC L&S and China’s Wanhua Chemical, has received its second very large ethane carrier (VLEC), named Gas Mingjiang. This delivery follows the arrival of its sister vessel, Gas Yongjiang, in August 2025. The addition of these ships enhances the company’s capacity to transport cleaner energy resources to international markets.
ADNOC L&S commented in a social media update: “Together, these vessels mark a major step forward in strengthening our ability to deliver cleaner energy to global markets.”
The new vessels are dual-fuel models, designed for efficient and reduced-emission operations. They form part of a substantial shipbuilding agreement valued at approximately $1.9 billion, signed by AW Shipping with Jiangnan Shipbuilding in July 2024. This contract covers the construction of nine VLECs and two 93,000 cubic meter very large ammonia carriers (VLACs). The remaining ships are slated for delivery between 2025 and 2027, supporting long-term fleet expansion.
At the time of the agreement, ADNOC L&S representatives described it as the largest order for the joint venture, which was established in 2020 to advance maritime logistics for energy products. The VLACs, recognized as the largest of their kind globally, began construction in April 2025. These vessels are engineered to handle ammonia transport, a key element in sustainable energy solutions, further diversifying AW Shipping’s operational capabilities.
The Gas Mingjiang and Gas Yongjiang are built to meet high standards for safety and environmental performance, incorporating advanced propulsion systems that allow for the use of both traditional fuels and cleaner alternatives. This design aligns with industry trends toward lower-carbon shipping, enabling more reliable delivery of ethane and other commodities to global destinations. The joint venture’s focus on such technology underscores its role in facilitating the transition to more sustainable energy supply chains.
AW Shipping’s growth reflects the strategic partnership between ADNOC L&S and Wanhua Chemical, combining expertise in logistics and chemical transportation. Since its inception, the company has aimed to optimize the movement of vital energy resources, contributing to global trade efficiency. The delivery of these VLECs represents a milestone in executing the 2024 shipbuilding program, positioning AW Shipping to meet increasing demand for specialized carriers in the ethane sector.
Looking ahead, the incoming fleet of VLECs and VLACs will bolster the joint venture’s infrastructure, ensuring enhanced service reliability and environmental stewardship. This development supports broader efforts in the maritime industry to adopt innovative vessels that reduce operational footprints while maintaining high performance levels. As deliveries continue through 2027, AW Shipping is well-prepared to expand its contributions to international energy logistics.
