Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 13, Moldova is set to launch a tender this autumn for the construction of large-scale renewable energy parks paired with battery energy storage systems. Carolina Novac, state secretary of the Ministry of Energy, shared details of the plan during a business forum in Chișinău.
To establish the capacity targets for the tender, the Ministry of Energy will conduct comprehensive energy system modeling and analyses. Preliminary figures indicate a need for 246 MW of battery storage capacity, with 72 MW allocated for automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) and 174 MW for manual frequency restoration reserve (mFRR). These systems will help stabilize the grid and support the integration of renewable energy sources.
Moldelectrica, Moldova’s transmission system operator, reported that around 80 MW of the required capacity can be provided by existing local generation units offering balancing services. An additional 94 MW will be sourced from newly formed balancing groups to ensure the grid can effectively handle variations in energy supply and demand.
The tender reflects Moldova’s focus on expanding its renewable energy infrastructure to enhance energy reliability. By combining battery storage with renewable parks, the projects aim to store surplus energy generated during high-production periods for use during peak demand, promoting a more efficient and sustainable energy system.
During the forum, Carolina Novac highlighted the importance of careful planning, stating: “To estimate the target capacity for the procurement exercise, the ministry will conduct energy system analyses and modeling.” Her comments reflect the ministry’s commitment to a methodical approach to meet Moldova’s energy requirements.
