The forum emphasized strategies to promote a hydrogen-based economy and support global sustainability goals. South Korea has taken significant steps to develop its hydrogen industry, including enacting a pioneering law earlier this year to create a clean hydrogen industrial ecosystem, a global first. Discussions highlighted hydrogen’s potential to meet rising energy demands while reducing environmental impact, aligning with efforts to address climate change.
Prior to the forum, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), the Korea Hydrogen Alliance, and the Seoul-based Global Green Growth Institute signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on advancing the hydrogen sector. This partnership aims to support the global transition to renewable energy and contribute to climate change mitigation through joint initiatives.
Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, in a congratulatory video message, stated: “The Korean government will work to establish a full-cycle ecosystem for the country’s hydrogen industry by expanding special industrial complexes for the sector and providing support for research and development projects in the area.”
The event coincided with a meeting of energy ministers from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies in Busan, focusing on global energy security and addressing increased electricity demands driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and other industries. These discussions underscored the importance of hydrogen as a reliable and sustainable energy solution.
The forum strengthens South Korea’s position as a leader in clean energy innovation. By fostering collaboration among domestic and international stakeholders, it supports the development of a robust hydrogen ecosystem. The partnership between KHNP, the Korea Hydrogen Alliance, and the Global Green Growth Institute enhances efforts to integrate hydrogen into global energy systems, contributing to sustainable economic growth. The Bexco convention center provided a key platform for these discussions, reinforcing Busan’s role as a hub for renewable energy initiatives.
