Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 27, China began operating the world’s first 660-megawatt ultra-supercritical double-arch coal-fired generating unit in Southwest China, marking a significant advancement in efficient and clean coal power technology, according to China Media Group (CMG). This innovative project integrates wind, solar, coal, and energy storage to optimize energy production.
The world’s first 660-megawatt ultra-supercritical double-arch coal-fired generating unit put into operation on August 27, 2025.
A representative of the project’s operator stated: “Once fully operational, the project will generate about 6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, with an output value of roughly 2 billion yuan ($275 million).” The initiative is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 300,000 tons per year, comparable to the environmental impact of planting 2 million trees.
The unit is designed to burn anthracite, a challenging coal type, more efficiently using a dual-arch design that ensures uniform and complete combustion. This approach enhances energy efficiency while minimizing pollution. The project employs coalbed methane for start-up and combustion support, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 53% compared to traditional fuel-oil ignition. It also cuts nitrogen oxides, sulfur compounds, and other pollutants by over 90%, according to CMG.
The initiative is expected to save more than 72 million yuan annually in coal costs, supporting upgrades to the region’s energy infrastructure. By combining coal with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the project achieves a balanced and sustainable energy mix, contributing to cleaner power generation in Southwest China.
A CMG spokesperson noted: “The unit has overcome key technical hurdles in achieving efficient and clean combustion of anthracite.” This technological breakthrough enhances the reliability and sustainability of coal-based power while addressing environmental concerns through advanced combustion techniques.
The project’s integration of renewable energy and storage systems highlights a forward-thinking approach to energy production.
