Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 16, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has signed a long-term agreement with Boingo Wireless to implement next-generation 5G and Wi-Fi networks across its maritime, terminal, and port facilities. This initiative, approved in June 2025, aims to modernize digital infrastructure and enhance operational efficiency at key port locations.

Under the agreement, Boingo Wireless will upgrade and expand wireless connectivity at PANYNJ’s marine terminals and related waterfront infrastructure. The enhanced networks will provide secure, high-capacity communication to support port operations, terminal services, and logistical coordination, particularly as critical redevelopment projects progress.

Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized the importance of connectivity, stating: “Connectivity is as essential to travel today as runways, railroads and roadways. Our commitment to strengthening our digital infrastructure ensures that the millions of people who rely on our facilities each day experience secure, high-speed connectivity that keeps pace with modern expectations.”

Executive Director Rick Cotton added: “Through this new contract, we will deliver best-in-class free and fast Wi-Fi, impeccable cellular phone service, and superb connectivity on all fronts to all travelers at our facilities. In addition, our new data transmission capabilities provide top grade connectivity for our ground service workers and other back-of-house partners. These across-the-board state-of-the-art technology upgrades will support customer service second to none at all of our facilities.”

The partnership, which began in 1999, will continue through 2038 with an option to extend until 2043. It includes significant expansions of neutral host 5G, Wi-Fi, and private network infrastructure at facilities such as the Port Newark-Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal, as well as major transport hubs and tunnels. Public access to these services will remain free of charge.

The upgraded networks will enable critical port functions, including equipment automation, IoT sensor integration, terminal operations, security systems, and seamless communication between vessels and shore systems. These improvements aim to enhance efficiency and reliability across maritime operations.

In August 2025, PANYNJ processed 835,845 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), slightly below the record set in August 2022 during a peak in cargo activity. The new connectivity enhancements are expected to support the port’s capacity to handle high volumes while improving operational performance.

This collaboration reflects PANYNJ’s commitment to integrating advanced technology to meet the needs of modern port operations. By leveraging Boingo’s expertise in wireless solutions, the Port Authority aims to ensure robust, reliable connectivity for both public users and operational staff, fostering a seamless and efficient experience across its facilities.
