Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 10, ScottishPower Renewables has completed the repowering of Hagshaw Hill, Scotland’s first commercial wind farm, significantly increasing its energy output while reducing the number of turbines. The upgraded South Lanarkshire site, which began operations in 1995, now features 14 modern, higher-capacity turbines replacing the original 26. The new installation delivers a total output of over 79 MW, sufficient to supply electricity to approximately 57,000 homes.

Charlie Jordan, Chief Executive of ScottishPower Renewables, stated: “Hagshaw Hill started Scotland’s wind revolution – and now it’s back online, supercharged and ready to lead the next chapter.” He added: “We’re proud of what this site represents: powering homes, powering communities, and powering Scotland’s clean energy future.”

The repowering project supported more than 100 jobs during the decommissioning and construction phases, demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy investments. The modernization not only enhances generation capacity but also sets new standards for sustainability and efficiency in Scotland’s wind energy sector.

In a first for ScottishPower Renewables, all blades from the original turbines are being recycled through Plaswire’s advanced processing system. This initiative will transform the decommissioned blades into construction materials used to replace concrete, timber, and plastics, minimizing waste and supporting a circular economy.

Plaswire Chief Executive Andrew Billingsley said: “Plaswire's recycling process diverts waste from incineration, reducing CO₂ emissions and replacing high carbon construction products.” This approach highlights how technological innovation and responsible material reuse can contribute to sustainable development across industries.

The Hagshaw Hill upgrade also brings significant community benefits. Annual community funding has increased 26 times, rising to nearly £400,000 each year to support initiatives in Coalburn, Douglas, Lesmahagow, and Rigside & Douglas Water. The funds will help strengthen local infrastructure, promote education and community projects, and improve quality of life in nearby areas.

CDLR Chair Iain Lindsey expressed appreciation for the long-term value of the project, stating: “This will enable us to support even more projects that will make a real difference to people's lives and leave a lasting legacy in our area.” He added: “It really is fantastic to see Scotland's first commercial windfarm continue to deliver clean energy and new opportunities right here where it all began.”

The repowering of Hagshaw Hill demonstrates ScottishPower Renewables’ commitment to innovation and sustainable growth in the renewable energy industry. By combining higher-efficiency turbines, advanced recycling solutions, and expanded community support, the project underscores how modernized infrastructure can enhance both environmental and social outcomes while contributing to Scotland’s clean energy goals.
