The initiative presents seven key measures to strengthen international collaboration on green shipping corridors. These include the phased expansion of green corridors, acceleration of green and low-carbon vessel development, construction of near-zero-carbon ports, enhancement of green fuel supply capacity, promotion of government-market cooperation, exchange of best practices, and encouragement of innovation in sustainable maritime technologies.
Several new cooperative achievements were unveiled at the forum, notably the joint establishment of a green shipping corridor between Qingdao Port in east China and the Port of Hamburg in Germany. This partnership aims to promote cleaner shipping operations and contribute to the global transition toward sustainable maritime logistics.
According to the Ministry of Transport, China has consistently ranked first worldwide in maritime connectivity for several consecutive years. The country continues to expand openness and strengthen international cooperation in the maritime sector. As of April 2025, China had signed bilateral or multilateral maritime agreements with 70 countries and regions, reflecting its growing role in global shipping governance and green transformation.
Major ports across China, including Shanghai Port and Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, have accelerated efforts to build infrastructure supporting the supply of green fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, and ammonia. These developments are part of broader initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of clean energy in maritime transport.
The 2025 North Bund Forum, co-hosted by the Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, is being held from October 20 to 21. This year marks the fifth edition of the event, which serves as a major platform for discussing global shipping development, technological innovation, and environmental protection.
During the forum, participants from various countries, international organizations, and industry enterprises exchanged insights on advancing the decarbonization of the maritime sector, digital transformation, and high-quality development of global supply chains. Experts emphasized that international cooperation on green shipping corridors is essential for achieving net-zero emissions in global trade.
The launch of the Green Shipping Corridor Initiative demonstrates China’s continued efforts to align maritime development with global sustainability goals. By promoting technological innovation, cross-border collaboration, and green infrastructure construction, China seeks to help shape a cleaner and more resilient global shipping network.
Through the initiative, the Ministry of Transport aims to encourage greater participation from international partners, expand the reach of green shipping corridors, and accelerate the transition to low-carbon shipping practices—contributing to the shared goal of sustainable growth in global maritime trade.
